* Transfer Pumps -- The majority of transfer pumps are of the diaphragm type that provide a maximum of 8 psi to the main pump. The diaphragm pump is simple in nature and usually trouble-free. However, the check valves may become sticky if the diesel fuel gets too old. Fungus and bacteria can gum up the valves and reduce both flow and pressure. Also, diaphragms can rupture, and fuel can leak into the engine oil. This can be detected during daily service checks. I''d like to begin the new year with a discussion of the basics of a diesel fuel system with an in-line pump and follow up in February with the distributor type pump system. As you know, all diesel systems have a fuel tank, one fuel filter (possibly more depending on the installation), a transfer pump, a high-pressure fuel-injection pump, high pressure fuel lines, low-pressure fuel lines, injector nozzles, and sometimes return (fuel overflow) lines. Figure 1 represents a typical diesel fuel system.
