The high pressure pushes against a piston that pushes against a spring. When the fuel pressure exceeds the spring pressure, the spring starts to collapse. As the spring collapses, the piston moves up, uncovering either a single or a multitude of holes. The fuel rushes out the holes into the combustion chamber or pre-combustion chamber. When all the fuel has left the injector nozzle, the spring pushes the piston back on its seat, tightly sealing the nozzle.
