[FIGURE 1-2 OMITTED]When the magnetic bearings are energized, the motor and impellers, which are keyed directly to the magnetic shaft, levitate. Permanent-magnetic bearings do the primary work, while digitally controlled electromagnets provide the fine positioning. Four positioning signals per bearing hold the levitated assembly to a tolerance of 0.00002 in. As the levitated assembly moves from the center point, the electromagnets'' intensity is adjusted to correct the position. These adjustments occur 6 million times a minute. The software has been designed to automatically compensate for any out-of-balance condition in the levitated assembly.SHUTDOWNS AND POWER FAILURESWhen the compressor is not running, the shaft assembly rests on graphite-lined, radially located touchdown bearings. The magnetic bearings normally position the rotor in the proper location, preventing contact between the rotor and other metallic surfaces. If the magnetic bearings fail, the touchdown bearings (also known as backup bearings) are used to prevent a compressor failure.

During the initial stages of a wildland fire, helicopters are usually busy with the more critical task of dropping water.The Los Angeles County Fire Department has found a third alternative. It has equipped bulldozers with built-in GPS units, a scheme that''s proved to be valuable because it takes the guesswork out of where a bulldozer line exists. The GPS receivers in these bulldozers have removable PC Type II cards that can be processed with associated mapping software. However, this bulldozer line typically makes up only a part of the fire line, the rest of which must still be mapped by other means.

For utilization and geographic location, in its October Offshore Rig Locator, Offshore Data Services shows 290 jackups working, out of a total worldwide fleet of 387 rigs, for 75% utilization, down 5% from last year''s 79%. The U.S. Gulf of Mexico had 108 jackups working, of a total 139 available, for 78% utilization. The second most active area was the Persian Gulf, with 32 of its 46 rigs active. Asia accounted for 66 rigs--in India, 22 units were all active; SE Asia had 18 of its 26 rigs working, and the Far East area had 16 of 18 jackups contracted. West Africa had only 12 of its 26 rigs working. Other active areas were: Mediterranean/Black Sea, 12; the Caspian, 7; Mexico, 6; Venezuela, 6; the Red Sea, 7; and Brazil, 5.
