 The operation of an EAF is a batch process in which steel scrap, pig iron, a source of iron oxide such as roll scale or iron ore, and limestone or burnt lime are charged into the furnace. The roof is closed over the furnace and electrodes are lowered until arcs are established between them and the metallic charge. The heat generated by the arc and the heat developed from the resistance to the flow of current in the metal melts the charge. When the heat (meaning the metal in the furnace) is finished, the furnace is tilted and poured into a tap ladle through a tap hole or spout in the furnace side wall. After each heat, repairs to the bottom and slag line are made by shoveling in a refractory bottom patching material. [FIGURE 8 OMITTED]To give the water team more breathing room, the 3T group suggested that the water team divide the official start of the test into two components: (1) the BWP and the reverse osmosis and (2) the reverse osmosis and the other two subsystems (AES and PPS). In the iWRS system, the pivotal subsystem is the reverse osmosis. This system receives BWP effluent, processes it, and provides product water for the two downstream systems. In effect, the BWP is independent of the downstream systems, so it could conceivably be started early when the downstream systems were still being built. Because of the modularity of 3T, the initial iWRS could consist of the first two subsystems, with the output going to drain while the inoculation proceeded, and the second iWRS could include all four subsystems. In this manner, the water team started the test with only the first two subsystems in April 2000 and brought the other two systems online in December 2000 in time to make a January 2001 full start. Though light in weight, Airbor magnetic drill has a powerful 1.6-hp air motor and 1,600-lb magnetic holding strength. With its extra rack, stroke length is extended to 10 1/4 in. Annular cutter capacity is up to 2 1/16 in. diam. Geared chuck adapter converts the unit to a standard drill press.
